In May of 2013 we took action to protect a jewel of the Upstate: Peters Creek Heritage Trust Preserve. This Preserve is located just off I-85 in Spartanburg County. It was established to protect a threatened and federally endangered plant, the dwarf-flowered heart leaf. A beautiful trail winds through the woods, along Mill Creek, and up to the remains of an old mill. This is a major recreational and natural resource for the Upstate.
A 9-acre tract bisected the Preserve’s trail and the stream that runs through it. When it went on the market, SCDNR was not in a position to acquire it. Over a period of months, we negotiated an acceptable price, and, with the help of a generous anonymous donor, we acquired the property. Peters Creek Heritage Trust Preserve, the trail that winds through it, and the creek that flows through it are now secure for generations to come.
