This section of Greenville County is one of the most botanically significant areas in the Upstate because of a unique and imperiled natural feature, the Piedmont Seep. Undulating hills and porous soil create wetland bogs at the low points where the now federally endangered bunched arrowhead plant is found. These ecosystems and plants are in danger because this land is typically drained and made into horse pastures or housing developments. We have not found the federally endangered bunched arrowhead on this property, but the biological conditions exist to support the plant in the future. Perhaps one of the reasons the plant is not found on the property is because the wetlands have been compromised by a dirt road that was installed for timbering, which prohibits the natural flow of water through culverts. Naturaland Trust removed the culverts and restored the wetlands in 2017.
When this tract went on the market, we had to act quickly, so we secured the 34 acres with owner financing in 2014. The owner gave us sufficient time to obtain the funds to pay off the acquisition price three years later, in 2017 through a grant with the SC Conservation Bank.
