When the Lowe’s was built on Poinsett Highway, the Friends of the Reedy fought to protect the stream that flows through the property, Langston Creek.  The protected urban pocket is why you see a tall column of full grown hardwood trees towering behind the Lowe’s.  They are the buffer for the stream that Friends of the Reedy secured. The Buxton neighborhood had bigger concerns, including establishing a permanent green area behind the Lowe’s where the forest was cut down and dirt was excavated for the Lowe’s store.  The Buxton neighborhood won that concession, but for years nothing had been accomplished to protect the property.

In April of 2012, after months of negotiations and work, Naturaland Trust received the 30-acre property from Lowe’s, transferred to carry out Lowe’s obligations under the agreement that allowed the store to be built.  Now, this property will be protected, shielding this important tributary of the Reedy upstream of the downtown waterfall.  Over time, a new forest will join the hardwoods that you can see towering over the Lowe’s on Poinsett Highway on your way to Furman.
