Cars overflow on Geer Highway outside the Raven Cliff parking area in Caesars Head State Park. The Greylogs Tract will help alleviate this pressure and allow for better, safer access to the public.

At the top of Geer Highway just before the state line and near the entrance of Raven Cliff Falls hiking trail in Caesars Head State Park, a small subdivision was made and homesites were marketed to potential buyers. At the same time, Caesars Head State Park rangers were having a difficult time with ensuring safety for overflow parking at Raven Cliff and an existing trail that was impacting species of concern. The solution to both of these issues, they suggested, would be a new parking area and trailhead. At the time, SC State Parks (SCPRT) did not have the budget to justify a purchase. We are always looking for ways to expand state parks and public access and securing these properties would do just that, while also solving critical problems for the one of the state’s most beloved parks.

We negotiated a purchase contract with the seller and started working on fundraising. As the time on our contract came to a close, we solicited the help of The Conservation Fund (TCF), a non-profit based in Atlanta, GA with a revolving fund for acquisitions. We borrowed the funding to close and over the next year, we raised enough money with the SC Conservation Bank to pay off the loan and subsequently donate the property to SCPRT. Greylogs will be a critical addition to the park to make public access more rubust and safer for years to come.
