In the late 80’s our founder Tommy Wyche devised a creative way to protect a large swath of mountain landscape next to the newly created Jones Gap State Park. The property owner, Richard White, was not interested in selling the land outright at the time. Every year, Tommy would come up with new ideas to try and convince Mr White, believing that this tract was too important to lose. Every year, Mr White would turn him down. Eventually, what appealed to the landowner was a brilliant idea by Tommy to create a partnership of investors who would all contribute to buying the property in exchange for a small lot on the mountain. Mr White would be paid for the land and would also be given the first choice of a homesite. A small number of lots were sold to the members of the partnership and the remaining property was placed under a conservation easement, to be protected in perpetuity.
In 2017, the Cedar Rock Partnership donated 276 acres to Naturaland Trust. We will join this property with our other holdings in the area and we have committed to donating those properties to strengthen a newly-expanded Jones Gap State Park.
